Accident and disability cover answer “alive but income stopped”: accidental death/disability scales, hospital cash and disability income. On a personal needs list they sit beside death duty, medical bills and CI cash—four different events: life for death, CI for diagnosis cash, medical for bills, accident for accident-defined disability/death cash.
Occupation class, total/partial (or ADL) definitions, waiting periods and exclusions (illness, high-risk activities, self-harm) decide usability. Write first: if you cannot work 6–24 months, who covers fixed costs—medical indemnity rarely closes long income gaps.
Group accident / employee compensation often ends on exit. Owners and mobile roles should ask whether a personal accident layer exists and whether occupation / high-risk exclusions were read. Definitions follow the policy; this site only frames questions—see /planning/needs-analysis.
Key questions to ask

- Do accident definitions, disability scales and illness-caused disability sit on the same policy?
- What remains after leaving group cover / employee compensation?
- How do CI cash and medical indemnity divide labour without overlap or vacuum?
