Owners often mix company-paid group cover with household duties on one mental ledger. Group cover may stop on exit while mortgage, dependants and partner debts remain. Draw two maps: household exposure and business/key-person exposure.
For key-person cover ask who is insured, whether the company or individual owns the policy, whether beneficiaries are shareholders or family, and whether the sum matches guarantees and replacement cost. Group leave gaps and FNA exemptions are structural—not “add-on” afterthoughts.
Key questions to ask
- If a key person cannot work, how do cash-flow and debts continue?
- Are personal vs company beneficiary and life-insured structures confused?
- Are employee benefits assessed on their own—not as a bolt-on?
- What personal continuation gap remains after group medical/life ends?
